The United Nations University conducted a workshop "Satoyama and Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems" in Kanazawa, Ishikawa with the participation Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Ishikawa Prefecture, and Kanazawa University.

Establishment of the "Noto Regional Association for GIAHS Promotion and Cooperation." This body was set up by Ishikawa Prefecture's Noto Region comprising of four cities, Nanao, Wajima, Suzu, Hakui Cities, and four towns, Shika, Nakanoto, Anamizu and Noto Towns.

"Noto Regional Association for GIAHS Promotion and Cooperation" submitted "Noto Satoyama and Satoumi's" application as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage System to FAO after receiving recommendations from Ishikawa Prefecture, the United Nations University, and Kanazawa University, and gaining cooperation from the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries.

Noto's Satoyama and Satoumi were officially designated as Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS), the first in Japan, at the GIAHS International Forum held in Beijing, China on 9 - 12 June, 2011.

Masanori Tanimoto, Governor of Ishikawa Prefecture, made an announcement that Houdatsushimizu town was added in "Noto's Satoyama and Satoumi" during Ishikawa Public Forum under the International Forum of GIAHS which was held in Wakura hot Spring, Nanao city.
